Dennis grew up in South Philadelphia, mostly under the care of his grandmother, Sylvia Benton. Early on, it was clear that Ms. Sylvia was a no-nonsense individual. She learned how to instill order and discipline while fighting in World War II as a member of the Women’s Army Corps. Dennis learned a deep appreciation of the military lifestyle and the warrior ethos while in her care. He joined the Marine Corps with her blessing...one of her proudest moments was attending his graduation from Parris Island. She showed him the way to be a leader as an active duty warrior and guided him during his transition to retirement. He learned the most valuable lesson Ms. Sylvia had to teach; perseverance in the face of adversity. Dennis would not be the man he is today without the tutelage of PFC Benton and he keeps her memory close, driving him to the successes he enjoys today.
